Some Interesting Color Coincidences
One of my favorite things to watch is the interesting coincidences that pop up when you have people from all over the world naming colors and putting them in palettes. Some fun stuff in there... go have a look and laugh.
What Do We Do With So Many Palettes?
Ok, so that's a lot of color... We're working hard on the code for Version 4 of COLOURlovers that will make it easier to find the color inspiration you're looking for, to share your color ideas with others and to make even more palettes.
Make Something Awesomely Colorful!
We have an API... Who knows what awesome stuff you might build with access to 1 million palettes. Some things that have already been built:
Your Palettes... Your Stories: Share Why You Create
In the comments below, share a bit of your story with us. I'd love to hear your answers to these questions. (They might help us explain to new lovers just why this place is so great.) Why do you create palettes?
What do you like about it?
If you use palettes from COLOURlovers, what for?
What makes COLOURlovers such a great creative community?
Thank you all so much. I'm looking forward to the next million, 10 million... and every other colorful milestone we'll reach together.

Why do you create palettes? - I love colors, simple so.
What do you like about it? - I love the idea of 'I'm not the only one crazy for colors here', then I love all CL's too. some are real good friends to me! :)
If you use palettes from COLOURlovers, what for? - hm, I don't use for nothing beyond to express some feelings ;)
What makes COLOURlovers such a great creative community? - we are all crazy for colors and we love that! \♥/
Why do you create palettes?
It's kind of like a stress relief for me. It takes a huge load of my shoulders
when I start playing with color. And as Julee said, colors are amazing. Not to
mention how fun it is. :P
What do you like about it?
Colourloving is fun all in it's own, but I think what makes it so special
are the people involved in it. Everyone is really supportive and inspirational.
You feel really welcome.
If you use palettes from COLOURlovers, what for?
I don't really use them in the conventional, professional sense. I mean, I
look at it as art, so if you ask someone "what do you use art for?"
It will be difficult to answer.
What makes COLOURlovers such a great creative community?
the opportunity of communicating ideas to through color? expressing
certain emotions or triumphs, tribulations and despair....it's all plausible.
you're free to do what you want, when you want it, how you want.
the possibilities are endless, really. ;D
Oh! Woo hoo!!!!! Very cool! Now... onto a billion...
My answers:
Why do you create palettes?
It is a nice way to exercise my creativity in a short amount of time.
What do you like about it?
It is fun and very satisfying. Plus, I enjoy experimenting with unique color combos.
If you use palettes from COLOURlovers, what for?
Sometimes for paintings or for digital projects
What makes COLOURlovers such a great creative community?
The great positive juju + Darius + Chris and their amazing hard work that they've put into this site.
yay! I've been a member for 4 years now (what?! time flies!) my first palette was
and it clocks in at #2158 and now were at over a million! that's amazing.
Why do you create palettes? it eases stress while still being creative. and I love colors.
What do you like about it? just about everything.
If you use palettes from COLOURlovers, what for? sometimes I use them in prints or graphics. mostly I print them out and hang them in my studio or make them my computer background
What makes COLOURlovers such a great creative community? the people. all the amazing, wonderful, helpful, creative people. I've made so many friends through CL some don't come here anymore but their palettes will live on forever.
Congrats CL!! You are my favorite Web site ever, and I couldn't be more happy for your accomplishment! <33333
Why do you create palettes?
Originally, I joined to Web site because I was working on a magazine project and needed a handy place to come up with a color scheme. There happened to be a contest going on at the time and I wanted to enter...and then the obsession began. I didn't win anything, but I had so much fun making them (and the community was SO kind, helpful and loving) that I've never stopped. If you look at my palettes and colors you can tell exactly how I feel on a particular day or what I'm listening to or watching. I make palettes for the fun of it and to forever immortalize daily inspirations. They also come in handy for design projects!
What do you like about it?
Everything. Period
But really, I love COPASO and making colors because I can really express myself and I can read other people personalities through their work as well. The great/loving community is a huge bonus. I've made so many dear friends on here. Nothing like those other networking sites.
If you use palettes from COLOURlovers, what for?
Design projects!
When I'm assigned to make Web sites, this is the first place I turn. You'll probably see several Miaka colored Web sites out there made by me. Also, in all my print design, I definitely use CL as a resource.
What makes COLOURlovers such a great creative community?
We all have the same thing in common! We love colors!
That's what makes this place so great, we understand each other. When I try to explain CL to friends or my co-workers that see me colourloving all day...they just don't get it. They don't know *why* I'm obsessed with all of these colors. Also, the colors and palettes and styles really represent each lover in their own way. I can look at a palette and think, "hey that looks like whoever's style."

haha. I can totally relate. My sister asked me about it one day and I elaborated with all the enthusiasm in the world. At the end, she looked at me like I was insane and said: "What's the point of it again?"
xD
Why do you create palettes?
I usually make palettes as a meditation. Finding and combining colours, and finding names for the colours and colour combinations acts very much like writing a haiku. It sensitises me to the world around me.
What do you like about it?
I love the way that mixing / choosing colours and combining them makes me notice colours in the rest of my life. It helps me find beauty in everything. Weeds growing in a cracked pavement, the roof of a house against the sky, sunlight shining through a scrap of plastic.
I also like the way I get sensitised to words - by choosing my own colour and palette names, and seeing those chosen by others. Its a kind of concrete poetry.
If you use palettes from COLOURlovers, what for?
I do use palettes for my animations, (I import them directly into Flash), and as inspiration for drawings.
What makes COLOURlovers such a great creative community?
We share something difficult to explain. What's so addictive about making palettes? And (mostly) its driven by love. It truly is about love. That's worth a lot.
Two years, 1000+ palettes, 2500+ colors named, almost 800 patterns and I don't see myself stopping anytime soon.
Why do you create palettes? Because it's fun, and ditto what some above me have said.
What do you like about it? Again, it's fun; and I like klip's answer. I find myself seeing color palettes everywhere I go.
If you use palettes from COLOURlovers, what for? My website, wardrobe, art projects, and they're nice just to look at.
What makes COLOURlovers such a great creative community? The people. We all love colors and we (usually) all understand each other in a way others who aren't colourlovers can't.
I create palettes to allow my creativity to show and to learn how to put colors together effectively. Also, I enjoy putting colors and themes together.
What do you like about it?
Just how simple it is to make something beautiful. There is something about the way different people perceive creation that inspires me. It also tells you a lot about that person.
If you use palettes from COLOURlovers, what for?
I have used palettes from CL on web design projects and graphic design project. It helps narrow down options for me.
What makes COLOURlovers such a great creative community?
I think just the openness everyone has to new colors and different types of color combination makes this site so full of creativity. Just that fact that everyone can name a color or name a palette screams creativity because unlike crayons, they aren't already "specified" to be something. So in a sense, this site allows you to "create" a color and it gives others who see it a chance to be imaginative and use that color in different palettes are patterns. It allows everyone to have some kind of input or effect on something.
CONGRATS CL AND ALL CL LOVERS!! I'm definitely a proud user of this website!
i'm so proud to be a member of this community! i've been around since 2005, and here is my first:
why do i make palettes? because i can't stop. i love colour so much i am never finished or satisfied. i have to keep making more combinations. i am an artist and a teacher, and i think i became an artist because of my love of colour. i used to collect paintchips (i literally have boxes of them) from Home Depot (okay, i still do) and lay them out on the floor and make palettes of sorts with them. this was like a virtual bunch of paintchips and much faster!
stress relief comes from making palettes. when its been a really bad or tiring day just sitting down and pulling together some colours melts it all away. i'm lost in a world of my favourite thing.
i try colors for projects but mainly i just try them for myself to see how they look. when i decide to do a project i will sometimes go back through my palettes for re-inspiration.
this is such a great community because everyone here is here for the love of the same thing. and love is the key word. you can feel it radiating from the pages. its just a very positive place to be. when i first discovered colourlovers i just couldn't believe a place like this existed. it was like i had stumbled upon a paradise. i thought, "you mean there are other people who think like me? and there are enough of them to support a website?!?!?!?! hooray!" from the first day i have always felt at home here. i venture into other on-line things, but they never feel as comfortable as this place.
i've said it before, as we all have, but never enough: thank you so much, Darius, for making this place. we really do love you. please don't ever go away. :)
Awoo! Congratulations COLOURlovers.com and each individual COLOURlover! Onwards and upwards into the wild, technicolour yonder!
Why do you create palettes? I'm not entirely sure. The joy of creation. The beauty of colour surprise. It's playtime. It's journaling. It's thinking. It often tickles my retinas.
What do you like about it? What klip said. Basically: 1) I see the world in a way I never saw it before. I notice colours and colour combinations everywhere, which makes life more interesting and beautiful. and 2) this site isn't just about colours; it's about words. I love playing with colour titles just as much as I like playing with colour palettes. Concrete poetry? YES. Colour haiku is, as the kids say, teh awesome.
If you use palettes from COLOURlovers, what for? I like to make palettes as gifts, especially for people who aren't CLers. I think most of them are baffled by the gesture, but I hope they appreciate it anyway. :D
What makes COLOURlovers such a great creative community? I've been a member of many different internet forums, and this is the only one that really and truly embraces the love. Like, there's a tangible love here. CLers are so interesting and creative and supportive. I don't think I've had a single negative encounter in the two and a half years I've been here. That is superlatively awesome. I still think we should have a COLOURmeet sometime. That would be better than cookies.
ColourLover meet! Yes I agree. A ColourLover Conference. Just think what that would look like. But I have a feeling most of the attendees would be wearing black.
I love how one color is just one color, but more colors together begin to communicate and transmit feelings, messages, can add value to a project and all that. It is also addicting, and it's also an older goal of mine to find out by practice how colors work
What do you like about it?
The world of color is an endless world to explore. Breathtaking discoveries expect you around every corner.
If you use palettes from COLOURlovers, what for?
My graphic design projects, professional and personal.
What makes COLOURlovers such a great creative community?
The attitude. I guess it started with a very focused brand, and users found it easy to stay close to the values and behavior implied by the naming "ColorLovers". And the tools this site provides for keeping in touch with other users. It's more person-to-person than Adobe's Kuler.
